Abstract: The Constitution of the Republic of Malta declares that the National Anthem of Malta is lnnu Malta opening with the words "Lil Din L-Art Helwa l-Omm li tatna isimha". In order to become a national anthem this composition had to pass through several developments. In 1922 Prof. R. Samut composed a short piece of music. This composition came into the possession of Dr A. V. Laferla who was then Director of Primary Schools. Laferla was immediately struck by its notes. He wanted to use it as a school hymn, having a nationalistic theme. He wanted to find a poet who was able to write a poem suitable to those notes. His choice fell upon Fr Karm Psaila, who was an already accomplished poet, to set the words to Samut's composition. [excerpt]
