Abstract: Apart from liturgical functions and celebrations, the common factors of today's feasts are the decorations in the streets, the processions with the statues, popular band programmes and fireworks. These are taken for granted, but all have a beginning somewhere in our history, and their present forms have been moulded through prevailing social conditions. It is not my intention to go into the intricacies of our social history, but only to shortly trace the origins of the external manifestations which make up the Maltese festa, and interpret the present when based on the past.
