| Abstract: | A significant area of progress in Maltese fiction since the seventies has appeared in the explorations of women's consciousness reflecting their increasingly emancipated position in society. Though scanty, Maltese feminine prose sometimes seeks an alternative to contemporary masculine representation in presenting the same world from a woman's perspective. The Maltese male novelist has very often tried to fathom the depths of the mind and the heart, and the female novelist (most particularly Lina Brockdorff and Rena Balzan) continued on this tradition but attempted to present the heart and mind from a woman's perspective.
