Abstract: This thesis proposes a new method in the teaching of Maltese writing at secondary level. Writing is a difficult process because it is a solitary activity. Contrary to speaking, it is not a natural process and it should be given priority in class because students benefit from it. First of all writing helps students improve their grammatical skills, vocabulary and style of expressing themselves. It also helps students to reflect deeply and to be strong enough to jot their own thoughts on paper. The thesis suggests that writing should be taught as a process. Thus, the students should first be given enough time to think about what they will write, then they will write their first draft, rewrite it edit it together with the teacher and at the end publish it. The thesis also presents six stories with different themes that are suitable for adolescents. From each story the students will learn a particular writing style (e.g. descriptive writing) and/or writing technique (e.g. conjunctions). Further on there are several activities, handouts and notes attached to each story, that teachers can make use of while teaching writing. With this thesis, Maltese teachers can get to know more about writing and the teaching of writing and can also plan more interesting and motivating lessons for students.
