Abstract: In recent years the historian's scope of study has been widened "to include aspects, material and psychological, or societies of the past that had bean more or less ignored or studied in isolation: geographical environment and climate, technology, demography, language, modes of feeling." The trend was initiated by French historians, one of whose ambitions was that all their endeavours, in different aspects of history, could be encompassed within a synthesis, a 'total or 'global' history, "Societies would be posited as wholes. Different parts or them connect and interrelate; the various approaches explore different aspects of a single entity."
