Abstract: This research paper aims to discover the growth and perception of sailing tourism for the Islands of Malta. The aim was to identify the strengths and weaknesses of Malta as a sailing destination, by analysing demand and supply, as well as identifying issues and challenges for growth of sailing tourism in Malta. The first part of the research included carrying out secondary research, in the form of a literature review was done in order to get a good background and to help develop an understanding of the subject. Then using qualitative research methods, which included: face to face and telephone interviews, with professionals and employees of the industry from both Malta and other European countries. With the objective to get a clearer view over recent changes in the industry and to figure out issues and challenges that companies are facing in this industry. The Research then used qualitative methods to analyse collected data and was then compared to literature reviewed, in order to draw conclusion and come up with recommendations for growth of the sailing industry in Malta. The research shows that Malta has several advantages for growth in the sailing industry and it could help Malta to promote sustainable tourism and even to reduce seasonality. However Malta does have several issues and challenges for growth that need to be researched further and invested in, in order to make Malta more attractive for sailing tourists and companies. If Malta invested in research and improved the quality of services and products for the sailing industry and created more facilities, berths and increased control and legislation to make Malta more attractive for foreign companies, Malta has large potential to grow in the sailing tourism industry.
