Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to survey, study and analyse the phenomenon of architectural interventions on the facades of parish churches in Malta and Gozo during the half of the 1800s and the first decades of the twentieth century. These interventions include complete dismantling and subsequent rebuilding, partial remodelling and accretions of the existing facades. Even though most of the interventions on the facades were part of a larger project, mainly that of the enlargement of the church, only the intervention on the West end are taken into consideration in this study. Another point of emphasis throughout is placed upon the earlier disposition of the facades, which were lost during the interventions, and are nowadays only recorded through photographic evidence.
