Abstract: Nowadays we come across virtual reality systems which may be said to have adequately succeeded at simulating highly realistic visual scenarios. The simulation of sound environments, designed to compliment the virtual visual world, has been an area of interest ever since the 1930's. Although scientists have extensively contributed to this field, due to the vast complexities in adding directional information to a sound, a level of competence in this area has not yet been achieved for such systems. Surround sound is the latest, and most widely adopted technological innovation which attempts to create a virtual sound environment. This, however, is not intended to include directional information to the sound. In this dissertation we introduce Audio X3, a software application capable of simulating 3D audio. This system deals with alternative ways to reach this common goal. As a sound approaches the eardrum, it undergoes spectral manipulation, or a head related transfer function (HRTF), as it encounters the listener's body parts such as the head, shoulders and pinna (outer ear). HRTF cues are interpreted by the listener's brain to deduce directional information of a sound source. Audio X3 applies the same HRTF sound manipulation to deceive the listener into thinking that a sound is originating from a particular surrounding position. The final result is a program which allows users to select any position in a 3D plane, and manipulates sound to include the respective directional information, when interpreted by the listener's brain. Following this interpretation, the listener will be immersed in a virtual sound environment.
