Citation: Galea, C. (1999). Karate: the first step for the formation of the self (Diploma long essay).
Abstract: The purpose of this long essay was to bring out the real essence of Karate-do under professional instruction and to clarify misconceptions which a considerable number of individuals have constructed throughout their lives. The main focus was on the beneficial effects of Karate on mankind and the qualities cultivated by this magnificent art. Emphasis was made on how these enable one to integrate in society and eventually to cultivate good habits which just like bad habits, are contagious. Several aspects were also discussed as regards Karate for youngsters who are not expected to become elite Karate-ka, but instead to become friendly, honest and respectable persons with the most desirable qualities any future society desires.
