An index to the dissertations of the Faculty of Education (1979-1986)

Abstract

As teachers in the Education Department for a considerable number of years, the authors, recognise the importance of original academic work produced by student teachers since the conception of formal training and education for the teaching profession. Most of the 'projects' (circa 1948/7 3) and dissertations 197 4-1988, are the result of painstaking research carried out by the student teachers as a culmination of the B. ED. (Hons.). although there is a mine of information on sundry education aspects one can fairly state that these works are rarely consulted or quoted. The main reason being that it is difficult to retreive quickly the information required. The publication of the dissertation Board gives certain indications on the nature of particular works as presented chronologically, but are not adequate to retreive categories or facets, such as works on a given topic or subject. In order to improve retreival, the authors undertook the task to compile an analytical index of the dissertations of years 1979 to 1986. Before setting' on this task they discussed the matter with the chairman of the Dissertation Board, lecturers, tutors, students and researchers, interested in this educational work. The general feeling was that such an index would provide the demanded easy access to information on a spectrum of education topics, the standard of which seems to be increasing from year to year. The procedure adopted to compile the end product is described in detail in the introduction.
