Cultivation of cherry tomatoes in green houses in Malta

Abstract

The dissertation carried out is based on the cultivation of cherry tomatoes in green houses in Malta. This project was carried out on a specific product in the horticulture industry because of the importance being gained by the product. This product is still experiencing growth in the market and hence there are several important measures that can be taken to strengthen the product in several ways. The aim of this project is to help find better solutions for the cultivation system of cherry tomatoes and establish which will be the best way to be presented on the market. Several researches were involved to reach several goals. The cultivation system was being observed from the stage that the soil was prepared, variety chosen to harvest and marketing. After all the observations, the case study began to be applied by establishing the requirement and problems cropping up that could be eliminated and improve both cultivation and marketing. The conclusions were three specific things. First the preparation of the soil where bad results were obtained due to bad tilling that can be eliminated by better tilling. Second the ventilation system of the green house was not offering the chance of earlier cultivation, the only possibility was to change the ventilation system of the green house. The last one was the harvesting demands and the way it should be supplied. These conclusions were difficult due to the difference between profits and demand. One had to go with the market demand due to small market that exists where surplus in some cases will destroy all the other supply.
