| Abstract: | In the 1950' s the Maltese economy relied mainly on the British naval base and after Malta gained its independence in 1964 the Government had to draft an action plan to minimize as much as possible the repercussions on the Maltese economy. The development of the Agricultural Sector was one of the main development plans. Although the Agricultural sector increased in terms of production output, still its contribution to the GDP decreased. (Farrugia, 2005) Agriculture faced numerous threats over the years, the major one being the scarcity of land. Most farmers' generations shifted to more profitable industries and there was also the development process for residential and industrial purposes apart from land being taken for roads and bypasses amongst other things. Still agricultural production prospered over the years due to better planting methods like drip irrigation and farmers being more willing to invest in modem methods of cultivation like greenhouses, plastic tunnels, etc. Pitkali Markets D |
