Abstract: This study was carried out to survey the available information on the local sheep population. In this study we shall delve into the history of the local Maltese sheep breed, what led to the decrease in their numbers through the years by the introduction of dairy cows and other historical events. Comparison to related breeds and a review of the existing legislation covering pure bred sheep shall be included .This study shall also consider the characteristics of a sample of the population in an attempt to establishment of the basic characteristics of the present local population as an effort to outline the Maltese sheep Breed. This may be utilized for the formation of a pedigree pre-register of the breed
