For the 13th consecutive year, the annual pilgrimage from Mellieħa to Senglea will be held on the night between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Last year, over 10,000 people participated and this year numbers are expected to grow further.
This night walk was started by Mr Joseph Vella from Mellieħa and his son-in-law Glenn, and year after year the number of people who join increases exponentially.
For several years participants have been contributing to the Puttinu Cares Cancer Support Group cause. Last year the amount if more than €100,000 was collected both from participants and several other sponsors who support this event. Participants are asked to donate a minimum of €10.
Everyone is invited to join this night walk on Friday 25 March which starts at 02:00 sharp from Misraħ iż-Żjara tal-Papa (outside the Sanctuary of Our Lady) in Mellieħa. Those joining are invited to be in Mellieħa latest by 01:30. This is approximately a 4-hour walk covering around 30 kilometres.
Upon arrival, a certificate of participation will be awarded to all participants and many choose to enter the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Senglea to pay their respects to Christ the Redeemer (Ir-Redentur tal-Isla).
Water stations and refreshments will be available along the walk.
Free transport prior to the walk from Senglea, at around midnight, and after the walk to Mellieħa will be provided upon booking.
Minibuses and coaches will be available along the route to pick up those who decide to stop and these will be taken to Senglea. Medical staff will also be on standby in case of any emergencies.
