The Malta Tourism Authority, has for the last ten years organised the Commemoration of the George Cross by a live re-enactment and a narrative son et lumiere on 15 April, in St George鈥檚 Square Valletta.
After ten years of holding this event on this date, this year it will not be possible to stick to the normal date because it transpires that 15 April this year falls on the morrow of Good Friday and on the eve of Easter Sunday.
To hold such a commemorative event on such a day, when all attention is focused on the most important liturgical manifestation of the Catholic Church, will be highly inappropriate. Neither will the date be conducive for a good turnout by those who care to attend.
The MTA has therefore decided to postpone this event to 13 September 2017. This particular day is also very significant for the same historical reason. It was on this day that the actual conferment of the GC medal was held during a ceremony that took place in St George's Square, in which Lord Viscount Gort, Governor of Malta, presented the medal of honour to Sir George Borg, Chief Justice, who received it on behalf of the Maltese nation.
