SESSION 1
Marika Padda Connor: Senior Practice Nurse in Transcultural Health within Primary HealthCare. Her role involves health education to migrants, training, and support for cultural mediators in healthcare, and training on migration and health issues for health professionals. She has also been involved in several EU projects on migration and health.
Jane Farrugia Buhagiar: An experienced teacher trainer, has taught in various schools in Malta. She is currently an education officer within the Migrant Learners’ Unit. She has participated in various consultative working groups focusing on migrant education and has coordinated and managed various EU co-funded projects targeting actions of inclusion in the education sector.
Juan Anton Gambina: Senior Executive within the Jobsplus Inclusive Employment ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ Unit, responsible for Vulnerable Groups and Migrants. Through the implementation of the AMIF project, Jobsplus, in liaison with various NGOs and stakeholders, is reaching out to migrant men and women with bespoke language courses, work exposure opportunities and recruitment services to ameliorate their integration and retention in the workforce.
Ann Marie Pisani: Senior Manager with the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS) on services that are provided by the Social Work Team, Therapeutic Team, UMAS Protection ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ and the Vulnerability Team. Holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Policy and a Master’s in Counselling specialising in children and young adults has empowered her to always work in sensitive areas in the past 15 years.
SESSION 2
JosAnn Cutajar: Lecturer in Gender and Sexualities Department at the University of Malta. She has over 20 years of professional experience as a gender and community development expert. She has worked as a consultant with various Maltese government entities. From 2017-2020 she acted as the coordinator for the Consultative Council for Women’s Rights within the Ministry for Justice, Equality and Governance. Between 2012-2017 she helped set up the Cottonera Resource Centre within the University of Malta as a university outreach post in a socially deprived area. This project won the 2016 EPALE award for community engagement. She also carries out research. The latest EU project she was involved in was GenderAction (Horizon Europe 2020, Grant agreement 741466).
Allaa Barri: Senior researcher with ICF, the Service Provider for the EMN. She is currently co-leading the EMN study on integration of migrant women, and other EMN informs, amongst other research projects. Allaa has over 10 years’ experience of policy and research in the migration and integration field, and is currently researching refugee integration policymaking in the UK and the US as part of her PhD in Social Policy.
Cristina de Paiva Lareiro: Sociologist and research associate in Research Field II "Integration and Social Cohesion" at the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Germany; BAMF German EMN NCP. Her current research focuses include quantitative research on the integration of ethnic minorities, especially with regards to vulnerable groups as refugees, women and children.
Michal Polakowski: Works within the Irish National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN), which is based in the ESRI. The overall objective of the EMN is to improve the availability of, and access to, information concerning migration and asylum at European and Member State level in order to support policy and decision-making in the EU. Michał holds a PhD from Maastricht University.
Kurt Xerri: Lecturer in Civil Law at the University of Malta and a former doctoral researcher at the UNESCO Housing Chair of the Rovira i Virgili University Tarragona, Spain. He currently serves as an adviser to the Housing Authority.
Rachael Scicluna: Applied Urban Anthropologist and Housing Policy and Strategy Development Consultant at the Ministry for Social Accommodation and Housing Authority. She has conducted extensive research on the interrelationship between home, infrastructure and urban policy in relation to changing family patterns, modern home space, gender, sexuality and economy in England and Malta. Rachael is also a Visiting Lecturer in the Faculty for the Built Environment, University of Malta, Malta and an active member of the Committee Bureau on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management within the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and anthologies.
MODERATORS
John Testa: Senior Manager within the Policy Development and Programme Implementation Directorate of the Ministry for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement. He has been working on migration policy issues for the past 12 years, also providing support on various policy matters that fall under the remit of the Ministry, including bilateral cooperation. He is responsible for the Maltese National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN). John read for a Master’s Degree in Youth and Community Studies, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Maltese and Psychology, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Probation ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ.
Joseph St John: Senior Official at the Ministry for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement. He has been working at the Ministry, in different capacities, since 2002. During this period he has gained experience in a number of policy areas including, among others, irregular migration and asylum.
