Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a method which aims to improve communication and relationships for participants. Participants are supported by a VIG Practitioner to view and discuss short edited clips of personal interaction. Through this process participants become aware of their skills in effective communication through self-analysis and self-reflection.
The Practitioner aims to empower participants in the process of change by exploring perceptions, building on their strengths and challenging assumptions. Relationships, interactions and behaviour can improve as participants change their communication style. VIG is based on theories of intersubjectivity; Attachment theory; Theories of mediated learning; Theories of change which emphasise respect, empowerment and collaboration; Theories of change which use self-modelling and video feedback. VIG was first developed as a parent-child intervention, with the aim of developing attunement and attachment between infant and caregiver. Biosketch
Edward Curmi is a registered Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist and Clinical supervisor. He obtained his bachelors in Psychology at the University of Malta and completed his doctorate at the University of Padua, Italy. Upon his return to Malta, he specialised in a number of psychotherapies, namely Gestalt Psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) and Video Interactive Guidance (VIG).
Over the last 12 years he has worked at St.Luke's hospital, Child Guidance Clinic and at Mount Carmel psychiatric hospital where he developed services for adult populations especially in the forensic and addictions wards. Over the last four years, he developed services in the Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (NPICU) at Mater Dei hospital. Edward is one of the co-founders and development coordinator of the NGO Dr Klown, which provides laughter therapy in all the paediatric wards in Mater Dei Hospital. For a number of years, he worked as a part-timer for Richmond Foundation where he supervised most of the staff in the various services offered. He was one of the psychologists who provided S.O.S.P. 福利在线免费 to various Maltese companies. He is author of one of the first self help books in Malta called 'Common Sense: a better understanding of emotional well being. In 2016, he will be launching the sequel of his first book. He has sat on a number of government boards and regularly participates in a number of psycho-educational programs on radio, television and the press media. At present, he is working in private practice and teaches Video Interactive Guidance (VIG) in different parts of Italy on behalf of AVIGUK.
