The M.A. in Film Studies within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Malta is proud to announce the screening of the feature film Shell (2012) by the award-winning Scottish filmmaker Scott Graham.
Shell will be screened for the first time in Malta on Saturday 30 April at the Auditorium, Old University Building, St Paul Street, University of Malta Valletta Campus at 18:30.
The Film will be introduced by its director Scott Graham, who will be in Malta from 24 April to 9 May as a guest of the Faculty of Arts, where he will be teaching on Filmmaking to students of the M.A. in Film Studies.
Supported by the BFI Film Fund, Shell premiered at the 2012 San Sebastian Film Festival and was
selected for the 56th BFI London Film Festival. It went on to win the Best Film and Best Screenplay
award at the Torino Film Festival in 2012 and Best First Film at the Brussels European Film
Festival in 2013. It also won the British Independent Film Award (2013) and was nominated at the
BAFTA film award in 2014 (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer).
The title character, teenaged Shell (newcomer Chloe Pirrie), mans the station with her emotionally
distant father Pete (Joseph Mawle), her only other contact coming from passing drivers – some
regulars, others only travelling through the desolate terrain. Set in a petrol station on a lonely road
in the Highlands, Shell is profoundly evocative in its setting and its attention to mood and character.
Refreshments will be served after the screening. This will give the public the opportunity to
meet with Scott Graham over a glass of wine.
The general public is cordially invited to the screening.
Entrance is free. Reservation is not mandatory but seating is limited, so if you would like to reserve
a seat, please contact Ms Yanica Cassar on +356 2340 2309 or at yanica.cassar@um.edu.mt.
