Delivering a deeper and fairer Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is one of the top priorities of European Commission President Juncker. The Five Presidents’ Report, presented on 22 June 2015, is the basis for achieving this aim within the next decade. In addition, the Commission committed itself to stimulate a broad-based consultation, facilitate discussions and open debates across the EU. This should gather ideas from across Europe on the future form of the EMU and help to shape consensus on the more fundamental changes that are needed.
To this end, the European Commission Representation in Malta in collaboration with the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy and the Institute for European Studies will be organising a debate on the future of Economic and Monetary Union.
The event is open to academics and University students. An expert from the European Commission will be explaining the current work and thinking on completing the EMU. Similar events are being conducted in all Member States which will culminate in a major event in Brussels in July 2016. These debates will provide input to further the work on deepening EMU, including the reflections of the Expert Group, which is to be set up in the second half of this year. The outcome of this process would set the stage for a transition to Stage 2 of EMU for which the Commission will present a White Paper in spring 2017.
The event will take place at the Faculty of ICT, University of Malta on 3 May at 13:30 (registration and light lunch at 12:30). While participation is free, confirm your attendance by email.
