EY Malta, in collaboration with the Ministry for Finance and the University of Malta, will be organising a third event within its EY economic series on the Maltese economy. The event held on Thursday 5 May, from 08:30 till 13:00 at Xara Lodge, limits of Rabat.
The event will kick off with an introductory speech by EY鈥檚 Country Manager, Mr Ronald Attard. This will be then followed by a presentation by the key guest speaker, Mr Henry Worthington from Oxford Economics, who will delve into the results of a study undertaken by Oxford Economics on the economic impact of an eventual Brexit.
This study is an analysis of the various implications which would emanate in the case that the UK decides to exit the EU following the 23rd June 2016 referendum. Oxford Economics was founded in 1981 as a commercial venture with Oxford University鈥檚 business college to provide economic forecasting and modelling to UK companies and financial institutions expanding abroad.
Oxford Economics has used its global economic model to study the possible implications of such an exit, including alternative Brexit scenarios, on various economies (including the EU and Malta). Amongst others, possible changes in trading patterns, capital flows, migration flows, labour market as well as freedom of movement in the business realm are analysed. Mr. Worthington will be explaining such an analysis and will also take questions from the audience.
In the second part of the event the focus will shift directly on the Maltese economy, more precisely on the property market. A short introductory video will introduce the team based debate on property. Over the years many have considered this type of asset as a safe investment, probably due to the year-on-year price inflation which has been witnessed in this market for a long period. In view of this persisting trend the teams will discuss whether the property market is sustainable and what implications any changes in property prices could have on the rest of the economy. A number of case studies of other countries will be presented. Such case studies will assist in positioning Malta鈥檚 property market status, and portraying possible future scenarios.
The teams will have time to present their ideas, whilst the moderator will manage the discussion, pose questions to both teams and also take questions from the floor so as to engage the audience. Audience poll/s will also be utilised. The event will then be concluded through the address of the moderator who will outline the most salient points and conclusions emanating from the debate.
