Theory and Treatment of Adult Firesetters
Deliberate firesetting is associated with huge human and financial costs. Until relatively recently, however, we knew surprisingly little about individuals who set fires as adults. This was despite the fact that approximately half of those apprehended for arson are adults. In this presentation the Multi-Trajectory Theory of Adult Firesetting will be presented.
Empirical findings looking first at the psychological treatment needs of adult male firesetters and then at the evaluation of a standardised treatment programme for firesetters will be discussed. While apprehended adult firesetters are 3-6 times more likely to be male, research with female firesetters will also be briefly presented.
