Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, University College London, will be an invited speaker at a special lecture being organised by the Caritas Malta Epilepsy Association in conjunction with the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Malta; President鈥檚 Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society and Epilepsy Society of Malta on Tuesday 13 June 2017.
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder affecting around 1% of all persons worldwide. In Malta around 4000 persons have been diagnosed with epilepsy. Despite medical advances 30% of persons with epilepsy remain refractory to medicines available and still have seizures. Moreover, there is still a great deal of stigma and discrimination and misunderstanding about this condition.
Professor Sisodiya is Professor of Neurology at UCL Institute of Neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and trained in Neurology in Oxford. His key interests are in epilepsy, difficult-to-treat epilepsy, epilepsy genetics and treatment-response genetics. He runs a specialist inpatient facility for the evaluation and management of epilepsy in adults. His lecture will focus on recent developments in the understanding of epilepsy and genetics.
