Presenter: Professor Mary Darmanin, Department of Education Studies, Faculty of Education
Abstract
Professor Mary Darmanin will report on some of the key findings and results from the National Institute for Childhood (under the auspices of the President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society) ‘Student-teacher Relationships in Middle Childhood Research’ project. The research is framed within children’s wellbeing research. The project adopts a bioecological systems approach with a phenomenological orientation. The research methodologies of the project, which include phenomenological analysis of child, teacher and parent interview data, ethnographic classroom observation, and quantitative Student-Teacher Relationship Scale data, amongst others, will be discussed in relation to the preliminary findings and results to be presented during the lecture. These include findings from Year 5 children’s phenomenological account of what being ‘a teacher’ means to them, their distinction between ‘good’ and ‘poor’ teacher relationships, as well as their yearning for close relationships with teachers and distress in relationships that are in conflict. Data relating to relationships with peripatetic teachers will also be presented. Results from the Student-teacher Relationship Scale [STRS] and from the Child Appraisal of their Relationship with the Teacher Scale [CARTS]) will also be presented and discussed.
The session will be chaired by Professor Carmel Borg, Editor, the .
