The Repertory Grid Technique:
A method of data collection and analysis amenable to both qualitative and quantitative analysis
The post-positivist paradigm and critical realism have emerged as strong alternatives to the traditional positivist – interpretivist debate in the social sciences. While recognising that there probably is objective truth in the reality of human experience, critical realism acknowledges that it is very difficult for the researcher to arrive at this truth due to the complexity of human attitudes, thoughts, and behaviour.
This thinking leads to an acceptance of both quantitative and qualitative techniques as valid processes of scientific enquiry.
This seminar will present the Repertory Grid Technique – a method of data collection amenable to both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Two specific examples of the use of the technique will be described and discussed. These include Gottfried Catania’s PhD dissertation on financial advisors’ perceptions of ethical and effective behaviour in their professions, and Greta Darmanin Kissaun and Gottfried Catania’s on-going study on the personality traits and motivations of clinical and counselling psychologists. A practical demonstration of the use of the Repertory Grid Technique as a research tool will also be included.
