in Room 317, Theology Board Room
The Department of Fundamental & Dogmatic Theology will be hosting a research seminar entitled ‘Spiritual Art: A Personal Experience’
Speaker: John Martin Borg (Watercolour Artist)
Venue: Theology Board Room (317)
Date: Tuesday 14 November
Time: from 16:00 to 17:00
Chair: Rev. Dr John Berry
Most of Borg’s religious art is inspired by biblical readings, sermons of particular significance and above all personal life experiences. The driving force behind these paintings is also provided by commissions and meditative moments. No matter what the source, he always strives to use his works as a means for personal meditation.
The preparatory concept studies as well as the use of colour and composition in the finished works all play a part in stimulating deep reflection. During the course of this illustrated talk, Borg will try to explain all this with the aid of some of his works.
In short, he will be focusing on three or four paintings, which were inspired by different situations i.e. commission; spiritual readings; personal experiences; and give a brief personal experience for each.
John Martin Borg took up watercolour painting after graduating in Pharmacy from the University of Malta back in 1977. He exhibited his first works in 1979, since then his works have gained recognition both locally and abroad.
He is mostly renowned for his maritime pictures and atmospheric landscapes. The artist has also a great interest in abstract and religious works, and in his hands the two are seamlessly intertwined, this gives the artist a good opportunity to keep exploring new grounds.
His spiritual works gradually gained in popularity and he has presented four personal exhibitions solely dedicated to his religious paintings, of which the one entitled 'Reflections on Pauline Theology', was given the status of a national exhibition back in March of 2009.
Tea and coffee will be served prior to the Seminar.
