The next brown-bag seminar organised by Faculty for Social Wellbeing will be held on Wednesday, 22 May, from 12:30 to 14:00 in Room 420 FEMA Building (FEMA420), University of Malta Msida Campus.
Entitled 'MENtal Wellbeing: Listening to Irish Male experiences of Mental Wellbeing and Help Seeking', the seminar will be presented by Niamh Donoghue, from the Department of Counselling, Faculty for Social Wellbeing.
The presentation will be based on ongoing Ph.D. research, looking at the experiences of Irish males in relation to mental wellbeing and professional help seeking behaviours. The research surrounding mental health and wellbeing among millennials points to three very concerning findings:
- millennials are deemed to have the highest level of anxiety when compared to previous generations
- young males are less likely than their female counterparts to seek help when they are experiencing psychological and emotional distress
- the highest suicide rate in the Republic of Ireland is among men aged 25–35.
As a millennial Ph.D. candidate, Niamh Donoghue has begun the process of interviewing Irish males about their reactions to the above, and their views about the ways in which current mental health services speak to them as individuals. This presentation will focus on her research journey, offering some background to the research and a brief discussion of preliminary findings.
