Towns and cities are in constant change due to various social and economic forces, including tourism. Tourism brings in much needed revenue into the economies of cities but, on the other hand, it generates impacts, some of which may be detrimental.
The Institute for Tourism, Travel and Culture at the University of Malta is organising a webinar on ‘What future for international tourism?’
Session 1 of the webinar (28 January 2021: 17:00 to 19:30) will discuss the role of tourism in historic cities. The historic core is an attraction in its own right and is often the location of the city’s most important attractions. The webinar will also consider how the relationship between tourism and the historic core is likely to change post-pandemic.
Session 2 (29 January 2021: Time: 10:00 to 12:30) will debate tourism in tourism resorts and coastal areas. Were tourism impacts a price worth paying for the economic benefits derived from tourism? How were tourism resorts affected by the changing tourism dynamics (low cost airlines, shared accommodation, easy online booking of travel and accommodation)? Some argue that the pandemic situation provides an opportunity to address problems of mass tourism at coastal resorts. Is this objective reasonable and achievable?
Eight international and local speakers will present their ideas on the subjects. These include Brian Smith from Heritage Europe, Leslie Vella (MTA) Dr Andrew Smith (University of Westminster), Dr Javier GarcÃa Sanabria (University of Cadiz), Prof. Alex Torpiano (UM), Prof. Tom Selwyn (SOAS), and Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino (UM). The webinar will be moderated by Dr Marie Avellino, Director at the Institute of Tourism Travel and Culture, together with Dr John Ebejer, also of ITTC.
