Event: Administering ecclesiastical justice: A public lecture by the Malta Classics Association
Date: Friday 9 April 2021
Time: 19:30
Venue: Online (Zoom - see below)
Speaker: Rev. Dr Nicholas Doublet
Abstract
Administering ecclesiastical justice: An introduction to the archives of the Bishop’s court in Malta. The Maltese diocese can boast of an archival patrimony extending as far as at least the 15th century. The lecture will provide an overview of the different fonds which have been produced through the administration of justice by the local Episcopal court. In the context of competing jurisdictions in Hospitaller Malta, this wealth of sources opens up a privileged window for the writing of a history from below. The presentation will include references to a newly discovered ‘formulation’ with its wealth of Latin and Italian introductions for use by the court, providing for any type of case upon which judgement was invoked.
