The documentary will be screened for the first time in Malta on Wednesday 9 June 2021 at Spazju Kreattiv, St James Cavalier, Castille Place, Valletta, at 19:30.
The event is co-organised by the voluntary organisation EMM (Electronic Music Malta), Fondazzjoni Kreattività , and the M.A. in Film Studies.
In the mid 2000's, with the help of MySpace, several composers from different countries spontaneously gave birth to an underground music scene that the Internet would call, among other names, Synthwave. It is defined as electronic music strongly inspired by the music, soundtracks, and pop culture of the 1980s. Narrated by the iconic director John Carpenter, ‘The Rise of the Synths’ is a documentary which amounts to a journey back and forth in time, from the roots of Synthwave to its impact on today’s pop culture.
Electronic Music Malta is supported by Arts Council Malta.
The University of Malta’s M.A. in Film Studies is sponsored
by the Malta Film Commission.
