The momentous inauguration of a High-Frequency Radar network and a system of port meteo-stations that the Physical Oceanography Research Group have set up and are committedly managing thanks to the €2.5 million Italia-Malta CALYPSO South Project is taking place on Thursday 12 August 2021.
The inauguration is taking place at the Għar Lapsi Reverse Osmosis Plant, close to the site of one of the radars.
In combination with numerical models, these systems are delivering data in real-time to national stakeholders on essential variables that describe the state of the sea (through waves, currents, temperature, salinity and sea level), and atmospheric conditions (wind, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, humidity, solar radiation and rain).
This data principally serves to aid national responsible entities for safer navigation, assisting with Search and Rescue Operations, and in case of threats from marine spills of oil and hazardous materials.
- Prof. Aldo Drago, the Project Leader and Coordinator of the Physical Oceanography Research Group,
- Prof. Alfred Vella, Rector of the University of Malta,
- Dr Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds,
- Dr Aaron Farrugia, Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning
- Mr Joseph Bugeja, Chairman and CEO of Transport Malta, and
- Mr Emmanuel Psaila, Director of the Civil Protection Department.
The event will end with a visit to the HF radar site itself, which will be an excellent opportunity to get a glimpse of the radar in action.
