Suitable Citizens pop-up exhibition on campus
The Maltese Citizenship Act states that an adult “alien or a stateless person…may be granted a certificate of naturalisation as a citizen of Malta if he satisfies the Minister” that, amongst other things, “he would be a suitable citizen of Malta”. But what makes a person a “suitable citizen“? The art project Suitable Citizens brought together a group of participants from different African countries and local artists and educators to produce various artefacts: photographs, screen printed tote bags, scarves, face masks and a large group textile artwork mixing stencilling with collage and painting. Supported by the local NGO Jesuit Refugee Service Malta, this socially engaged work forms part of ‘Acting on the Margins: Arts as Social Sculpture’ (AMASS), a
Horizon 2020 funded project in which the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta is involved along with several European institutions.
The exhibition can be visited at the New Art Studio (portacabins) in Car Park 6 :
The exhibition will be open to the general public on Sunday 31 October 2021 from 10:00 to 15:00 and again on Monday 1 November 2021 between 13:00 and 15:30 for members of staff and students.
Visiting members of the general public will be required to show their vaccine certificate and leave their details for possible contact tracing.
