Updates on luxury (tourism) consumption: Implications for marketing and communication
Abstract
While luxury consumption used to be among a more limited group of consumers in the past, it has made a significant progress particularly in the last two decades. In such a progress, the impacts of the transition to consumerism can be seen with the new millennium and developments in technology. There are different considerations of luxury in different contexts. Some individuals buy luxuries to indulge themselves, while others aim to display wealth and self-expression. Consumers need luxury consumption with the purposes of obtaining status for themselves or emulating (snobbism) in a society. Based on this, we may propose that luxury consumption should be seen as a tool of communication among individuals speaking the same language. Having said that, this seminar will present the summary of current few studies, co-authored and released in various international journals, specifically on the meaning of luxury shopping in a tourism context, and how it may open avenues for marketing and communication.
