This morning, the STEM Engagement Working Group & Esplora officially gave the green light on a project they’re currently organising with the support of the Birgu Local Council. The inauguration event, which was held at Birgu’s Couvre Porte and preceded by Dr Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, Executive Chairman of the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST), highlighted the main attractions which will make up this festival’s programme. The main aim behind this initiative is to bring science, which is a vital component in our daily lives, to the community.
Dr Pullicino Orlando emphasised the fact that science can be entertaining and accessible to everyone within the community, regardless of their socio-economic background. He extended his gratitude towards the MCST staff, the local councils and other ministerial dignitaries for their commitment in organising and supporting this event.
The Esperimenta Tikka Xjenza festival will include various science related shows as well as more artistic ones, bringing science and the arts together into one event. The programme will include a number of exhibitions, interactive games, a short film revolving around the theme of a more ecological and just world, and other creative tinkering activities. Our University will also be forming part of the line-up through its Institute of Earth Systems and the Faculty of Engineering (together with the Chamber of Engineers), bringing forth an interesting concept which will seek to engage with a living ‘book’ in a Human Library and various engineering projects such as SAVE, Water Filtration, Pollution Monitor & WinMar), respectively.
Also present for the event was Alison Zerafa Civelli, Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, who expressed how important it is for people from all ages and walks of life to attend to this event in order to appreciate the vital role science has on our daily lives. She thanked and congratulated all those involved including the STEM Working Group, behind this event, whilst conveying her wish to see further similar events being held elsewhere across the Maltese Islands.
Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation joined others in thanking those behind this event and highlighted the pivotal role that such event can have on the local community, by bringing to the younger as well as the more mature population a number of activities which showcase what science is all about.
Present at the event were various representatives and mayors from neighbouring local councils mainly those of Kalkara, Isla and Bormla, alongside Birgu’s mayor, John Boxall. The organisers are keen on taking this festival on tour across the Kottonera and Kalkara areas, in future events.
Esperimenta Tikka Xjenza will be free for everyone to attend and will be held on Saturday 23 July 2022 at 18:00 till 22:30 in Couvre Port, Birgu, making it an ideal outing amongst friends and families.
