The Malta Global Game Jam is back in person for 2023!
The Global Game Jam is a creative event where you team up with other people to make a playable game in 48 hours. Between 3 - 5 February 2023 jammers will be making games in more than 295 sites in 60 countries!
What is a Game Jam?
A game jam is an event where participants gather together to create a video game within a short period of time, usually ranging from 24 hours to a week. The time constraint encourages creativity and teamwork as participants must come up with and execute their ideas quickly. Game jams can be held in-person or online, and they are often organized by communities of game developers. Some game jams have a specific theme that participants must incorporate into their games, while others have no theme and allow for more creative freedom. The completed games from a game jam are often shared online for others to play and enjoy.
Is this only for programmers?
No, game jams are not limited to programmers. Game development is a collaborative effort that involves many different disciplines, including programming, art, design, music, and writing. Game jams are a great opportunity for people with different skills to come together and make a game. Participants can work on programming, creating artwork, composing music, designing levels, and writing dialogue or story. Some game jams even have specific roles and teams such as a team leader, artist, musician, and developer. Anyone with an interest in making games can participate in a game jam, regardless of their background or experience level.
Should I participate?
Participating in game jams will improve the speed at which you do things. For example, as a programmer, you will see some shortcut to making the same thing not so pretty in the code but functionally the same which is important for a game jam.
Are game jams good for beginners?
In fact, I think that working on a game jam is one of the best ways for new game developers to build confidence, design and work on a project from start to finish, and level up their coding skills. Game jams can be anywhere from a few days to a month long, but most average out at about a week to ten days.
The Malta chapter of the Global Game Jam is organised by the Institute of Digital Games, University of Malta. This year we are returning to the regular in-person format. There will be limited amount of space available at the event. In addition to providing space for jammers, we also host exclusive keynotes and an expert panel.
