Speakers:
Karin Dumstrei is the Head of the EMBO Fellowship Programme. Before joining the Fellowship Programme, Karin was a Senior Editor at The EMBO Journal. She received her PhD from the University of California in Los Angeles and did her postdoctoral research at Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen.
Bernd Pulverer is the Chief Editor for EMBO Reports and the Head of EMBO Press. Following undergraduate studies in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, Bernd received his PhD in 1992 from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in London. He carried out postdoctoral research as a molecular biologist specialising in signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, proteolysis, cancer at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and at the University of Innsbruck. Bernd was Senior Editor at Nature from 1999 until 2002 and subsequently Chief Editor of Nature Cell Biology between 2002 and 2009. He is the Head of EMBO Press since 2009 and the Chief Editor of The EMBO Journal, until 2021. He is the Chief Editor of EMBO Reports since 2021. Bernd is a member of the advisory boards of bioRxiv, Review Commons, DORA, RORI, ASM publications, Vienna BioCenter-VIP2, QUEST, STM Image integrity and PRO-MaP reproducible methods working groups.
Presentations:
EMBO offers different funding opportunities including Postdoctoral Fellowships and Scientific Exchange Grants to support researchers at various stages of their career. These programs aim to foster scientific collaboration and career development within the field of molecular biology. Karin Dumstrei will describe the different funding opportunities offered via EMBO’s Fellowship Programme, as well as frequently asked questions and things to consider when applying.
Scientific progress depends on efficient mechanisms to share rigorous, reproducible research through peer-reviewed scientific journals. Open Science describes efficient access to all meaningful, reliable research outputs, including data repositories and preprints. EMBO was a co-initiator of the San Francisco Declaration for Research Assessment (DORA) 10 years ago this month, which has been transformative in reducing the reliance on misleading bibliometrics and in promoting a more nuanced, holistic approach to research evaluation. Bernd Pulverer will discuss ‘Transparent Publishing and Open Science - how to share reproducible data’. He will discuss mechanisms of science communication with a focus on the optimisation of selective editorial processes to render them more fair, informed, and efficient, introducing the Review Commons journal agnostic peer-review service. He will outline quality assurance processes for research integrity and data curation which result in more reliable and reproducible research papers. Finally, he will describe Open Science platforms that facilitate sharing of research data with minimal delay and maximal transparency to complement journal publishing. This includes preprints and the EMBO SourceData platform, which allows data-centric publishing and data directed search.
