Abstract
The acquisition of a second language (L2) is a complex and challenging process and this is especially so in the case of the acquisition of L2 phonology. Having intelligible L2 pronunciation is vital for achieving successful communication as suggested by Guiora et al. (1972) who argue that pronunciation is the very core of speech. An adult learning a second or a third language may be able to attain native-like proficiency in syntax and morphology, but not in phonology.
The thesis investigates the production of English vowels and plosives by Palestinian EFL learners to identify pronunciation errors and investigate to what extent these sounds differ among different proficiency groups. Furthermore, this study investigates to what extent Palestinian EFL learners’ L1 affects their English pronunciation. As part of this talk, Montaser Motia Ujvari will present the research questions and explain the significance of this study, against the background of the previous research on pronunciation errors in the English of Palestinian EFL learners, before outlining and justifying the materials and procedures that will be used for data collection within its remit.
