The Network of Universities of Small Countries and Territories, , which the University of Malta, and subsequently the Junior College forms part of, published a statement in light of recent events affecting the independence, sovereignty and safety of the Ukrainian nation and its citizens, and the peace and stability of Europe and the rest of the World.
"Our position is not ideological, but one that is coherent with higher education institutions' function and role as repositories of cultural heritage, of educating global citizens with a commitment to understanding and to peaceful coexistence, and as promoters of international cooperation and dialogue. The international and our respective national communities would be ill-served if our voices were not to be heard in situations such as this very dramatic one." said a representative from NUSCT.
The Network condemns the invasion of the Ukrainian territory and the breach of its sovereignty by the Russian armed forces, and supports the global demands for an immediate halt to the armed aggression, for the respect of international law, and for the diplomatic and peaceful resolution of all conflicts.
Likewise, the University of Malta and the Junior College encourage citizens and organisations of the world to incessantly dedicate their energy to the global preservation of peace, tolerance, dignity, mutual respect and understanding.
It is important that we treat each other with dignity and respect, no matter our nationality, race, ethnicity and creed.
In these dark moments we need to foster positive interactions between us and support each other. Let us be a force of peace.
Anyone who is subject to ill treatment is encouraged to come forward and write to the Office of the Principal to help end discrimination and oppression.
