On Wednesday 1 December 2021, students taking Economics at the Junior College had the opportunity to meet the Minister of Finance and Employment, Hon. Clyde Caruana, at the Auditorium. Following an introduction by the Principal, Mr Paul Xuereb, the Minister kicked off by stating the importance of pursuing studies particularly in a small country like Malta, whereby its economic growth depends greatly on the quality of human resources.
The Minister answered a series of questions put forward by the moderator, a second year student – Nolan Camilleri. He explained his role as Minister of Finance and Employment and his responsibilities in the running of the economy. Issues of particular interest included the impact of the pandemic on the Maltese economy especially on the government’s finances, fiscal prudence, the economy’s reliance on fuel consumption, and the increasing ageing population.
Furthermore, students in the audience posed a series of questions, including the necessary conditions for Malta to move to a cashless society and the future of AirMalta. The event proved to be highly educational as it gave the opportunity to students to move from theory onto real-life application.
