The Malta Chamber of Scientist is working with the international NGO to run a community, media literacy project called which aims to empower citizens in the use of technology.
Social media and the use of personal tech have become a defining feature of modern life. Yet there is little transparency around the design of these products and platforms. NGO Tactical Tech has designed a series of workshops that demystify the covert design features in the devices we use daily and how personal data is collected and monetized to the detriment of the user.
The following set of online workshops will be held between Monday 21 March and Thursday 24 March 2022.

Each workshop is 40-60 minutes long and the number of participants will be limited to between 10-20 students depending on the workshop. An invite will be sent to all those who express their interest.
Demystifying Your Data - Monday 21 March 2022 @ 18:00
This workshop defines and explores various types of “data” which are commonly shared and collected online. Including group activities which encourage participants to talk openly about data concerns, investigate browser history, and deny unnecessary app permissions on their smartphone.
Smart Phones, Smart Habits - Tuesday 22 March 2022 @ 18:00
This workshop is focused around habits, how they are formed and the correlations between forming a good habit like drinking more water or doing more exercise and learning to set boundaries with our phones. We will dive deep into the many ways our phones have been designed to grab our attention and we look at a few ways we can outsmart our smart phones.
Keep Calm and Spot the Design Tricks - Wednesday 23 March 2022 @ 18:00
This workshop explores the world of persuasive design and design tricks, which are design decisions on websites, apps, and in advertisements that provoke us emotionally and persuade us to click, share, and buy. By becoming aware of our physical and emotional responses to stressful stimuli and the persuasive designs of tech which are rooted in basic psychology, this workshop helps participants keep calm and spot the design tricks.
Make Passwords Stronger - Thursday 24 March 2022 @ 18:00
This workshop explores passwords, passphrases, and password managers. Through hands-on activities and discussions, participants will learn about the different types of passwords, and how to use a password manager. By creating and rolling password dice, participants will practice making strong passwords.
