This session intends to examine how the time allotted in the linear development of grades and classification methods could be used for a more exploratory dimension in teaching and learning. It will explore the experimental avenues in the repertoire of teaching and learning, and in the process mitigate the reductionist and calculative impact of the present grading system. When teachers and students are able to reflect on non-graded material covered in class, the tendency to discriminate between successful and unsuccessful students diminishes. Thus, in this space for reflection, educators can revive the idea that education can once again be seen as justice-oriented.
Dr Mark J. Debono is a Senior Lecturer II in the Department of Systems of Knowledge at the Junior College. He has recently obtained his PhD in the pedagogical sciences from the University of Cyprus under the supervision of Professor Marianna Papastephanou whose publications address the political implications of eugenics as well as the concept of autoimmunity in democratic societies. Dr Debono鈥檚 research interests about the concept of authority in a post-truth context are influenced by the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Jacques Derrida.
