On Wednesday 8 February 2023, students taking Economics at the Junior College had the opportunity to meet the Minister of Finance and Employment, the Hon. Clyde Caruana, at the Peter Serracino Inglott Auditorium. Following an introduction by the Area Coordinator for Business and Technology, Mr Stefan Schembri, the Minister answered a series of questions put forward by the moderator, a second year student – Dana Vella.
Issues of particular interest included the impact of the war in Ukraine on the Maltese economy, the current inflation, the sustainability of the growing national debt, the possibility of using alternative sources of energy, and the pension scheme, in light of an ageing population.
Furthermore, students in the audience posed a series of questions, related to the ever-increasing property prices and the negative externalities of the construction industry. The Principal, Mr Paul Xuereb, wrapped up the event by thanking the Minister, while presenting him with a gift. This occasion proved to be highly educational as it gave the opportunity to students to move from theory onto real-life application.
