On Tuesday 6 December 2022, the Physics Department, with the assistance of Ms Antonia Vella and Mr Kevin Mizzi, organised a visit for 2nd Year students taking Physics at Advanced Level to the Standards and Metrology Laboratories in Kordin.
The students were greeted by Dr Nicola Testa, director of the Laboratories and were divided into two groups. Each group was taken around all the labs. There were labs which provide accurate measurements of mass, length, temperature and pressure amongst other quantities. Dr Testa explained in detail the apparatus and the testing they do with respect to mass, volume and pressure whereas Mr Duncan Camilleri (an old student of JC Physics Department) and the technician Mr Ivan Cezek explained in detail the function of the temperature laboratories and the legal metrology.
The Laboratories personnel work in close collaboration with similar laboratories in United Kingdom. They do the standardisation and related activities at various levels: corporate, national and international levels. They make and publish standards in relation to category, type of products and/or services. The function of the legal metrology provides consumers with the assurances that correct measurements are conducted, reliably and consistently, for instance, that they are given the correct amount of petrol when fuelling a car or to have the correct weight of food in a particular snack pack.
