On Wednesday 13 March 2024, the Department of Biology organised a fieldwork event related to ecological investigations at Buskett. This trip was organised in compliance with the MATSEC Advanced Biology Syllabus for all 1st year Advanced Biology students. A team of lecturers and lab officers accompanied the students throughout the event.
The fieldwork was divided into four outdoor activities: In the first activity students collected ecological data by identifying and counting the number of plants in a straight line using the line transect method. The second activity involved a belt transect in which students collected ecological data by counting plants in a definite area in the garigue area. This was followed by the students measuring the height of stems of Ferula meletensis in 2 different sites and using the t-test to analyse the data obtained. Finally, the students carried out random sampling in which ecological data was collected by sampling the steppe area by the use of quadrats.
