The Linguistics Olympiad Malta (LOM) is a problem solvers’ challenge based on logic, language and linguistics. The first edition was held in 2023, and the winning team was made up of Junior College students Liliana Francalanza, Oskar Lutterbeck and Giulia Muscat.
This year the competition involved two rounds: a team competition and an individual competition. Three students from Junior College, Ariana McCarthy, Bagdad Ahmad Asaf and Mila Scicluna Bartoli, took part as a team in Round 1, placing fourth. Two of these students then went on to participate in the individual competition. The aim of this second round was to select the top four students to form a Malta team for the International Linguistics Olympiad to be held in Brasilia in July. We are very pleased to announce that Ariana McCarthy obtained a top four placing and has thus been chosen to form part of the Malta team together with students from other sixth forms. Congratulations to Ariana for this wonderful achievement, and well done to Bagdad and Mila for their participation and commitment.
