On Thursday 22 May, the Departments of Maltese and English at the Junior College collaborated and organised a workshop to introduce the work of the poet Malika Booker. The latter will be performing at the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival this summer. The inspiration behind this critical appreciation event was to create awareness among students not only about Booker but also about the genre of spoken word poetry.
After a biographical introduction on Booker by Ms Claudia Gauci, a group of Maltese and English Advanced Level students were invited to watch a reading of a poem and a performance of another by Booker. For the spoken word poem, Ms Leanne Ellul then presented the students with the transcribed text and they were invited to work out the versification based on the viewing and on their awareness to the sounds and cadences of the text. At the end, Mr Keith Azzopardi provided students with information on the Festival, encouraging them to attend.
