Bl-Għeruq u x-Xniexel is the current series on Campus 103.7 produced and presented by Dr Charles Xuereb, historian and broadcaster with a Master degree in Media Management (Stirling) and a PhD from the University of Malta. He lectures on communication, collective memory, identity and colonialism. As Chairman of the station’s editorial board, Dr Xuereb brings with him the experience of decades in the media having produced, also on the University radio, scores of productions over more than 50 years. He has been on TVM, Malta’s public broadcaster, since 1969. The current radio series puts historical and topical issues under the lens with the participation of academicians and experts qualified and experienced in the subject under review. The Maltese expression Bl-Għeruq u x-Xniexel finds its equivalent in English in the expression ‘warts and all’ a phrase that besides positives also features qualities that are not appealing or necessarily attractive. In other words, especially on historical themes, a counter history approach is usually applied. Among subjects which have been tackled in this series – now available on the University of Malta’s archives section on demand – were economical, political, cultural and educational issues that concern society, including the advantages and perils of Artificial Intelligence, mostly as an educational tool. The series also interviewed the archaeological duo, Eleanor Scerri and Nicholas Vella, on their star discovery of a Mellieħa cave attracting international acclaim. Other topics in the coming weeks include gender equality, justice concerns regulation, neutrality, emigration, Easter Maltese traditions, threats to the use of Maltese language, cardiology, medieval and renaissance history that is pertinent to the Mediterranean and Maltese patriotism. Bl-Għeruq u x-Xniexel will continue on Campus 103.7 in its next schedule in April 2026. |
