The School of Performing Arts' Department of Dance Studies organised a programme of choreographic work for World Dance Day 2017 in Valletta this weekend, drawing crowds of onlookers and participants.
A flash mob to 'Can't Stop the Feeling' started the performances, in front of the Courts of Law in Great Siege Square. The second year students then taught the steps to the public so they could join in. Bachelor of Dance Studies students performed two works of contemporary choreography, and Junior Dance Company Malta shared a new work, One Up, choreographed by Dance Studies third year Georgia Evans.
The sharing concluded with a performance of Egyptian belly dance by Dance Studies third year Yasmin Falzon, opening up into an invitation to the public to join. The event garnered attention from around 500 passers-by, and was made possible through the volunteer efforts of the students and staff of the Department of Dance Studies and JDC Malta.
Donations were collected for local charity Victim Support Malta.
World Dance Day takes place annually on 29 April; the concept was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, a UNESCO partner NGO to bring people together with a common language- dance. The theme of this year’s International Dance Day was ‘We, Dance Together’.
