Instruments of the Malta Seismic Network, operated by the Seismic Monitoring and Research Group, Department of Geosciences, on 8 August 2017, recorded a magnitude 3.6 earthquake below the sea-bed about 40km south-east of Malta, at 16:29 local time.
The SMRG received a few online reports of minor shaking felt by residents in Naxxar and Zabbar. The earthquake is related to seismic activity ongoing on the fault systems in the Central Mediterranean. Anybody who felt the earthquake is invited to submit a report .
The Malta Seismic Network has recently been expanded, and now consists of six broadband seismic stations installed over Malta, Gozo and Comino, together with a number of other, temporary stations as part of an international project.
