Automation, control systems, robotics, intelligent transportation systems, signal and image processing, machine learning, biomedical engineering, computer vision – these are just few of the several exciting areas that the University of Malta’s Department of Systems and Control Engineering teaches and develops in its laboratories. Here young engineers are prepared for the brave new world of driverless cars, drones and intelligent devices of the near future.
On Thursday 14 December 2017, as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Department, the newly refurbished and relocated Control Systems Engineering Laboratory, located on the third floor of the Faculty of Engineering building, was inaugurated.
During the inauguration, Professor Kenneth Camilleri, Head of the Department, took the opportunity to thank all the academic and support staff for their invaluable contributions over the past 10 years that permitted the Department to grow into a dynamic and successful department. Professor Simon Fabri, senior academic in Control Engineering, thanked all staff who were involved in the relocation of the Control Systems Engineering Laboratory and explained the motivations behind this move. Dr Andrew Sammut, Dean of the Faculty, showed appreciation for the University’s investment in new engineering laboratories. Professor Godfrey Baldacchino, Pro-Rector and the Rector’s delegate for this event, noted that greater investment calls for greater responsibility towards students and society at large. Following these interventions, the new Control Systems Engineering Laboratory was opened and the guests were invited to enter and view the Laboratory.
The new Control Systems Engineering Laboratory has been partitioned into two distinct spaces: one space is organised for practical teaching and laboratory exercises where students carry out their hands-on practical sessions in control, automation and systems engineering; and the other space is a control engineering and robotics research area reserved for student and staff projects and research and development activity. In this manner, teaching and research activities can be carried out simultaneously without interference.
The refurbishment of this laboratory was a major project involving several University units and individuals. In this regard, the Department would like to thank the Rector, Professor Alfred Vella, who acceded to the Department’s request for this investment in refurbishing the relocated Control Systems Engineering Laboratory. The Department is also grateful to the Estates, Facilities and Capital Development Directorate, to the Procurement Directorate and to the Finance Office, whose staff worked hand in hand with the Department over the past six months to successfully complete this refurbishment.
