The book written by Professor Frances Camilleri-Cassar at the Faculty of Laws is a first of its kind. It is about research methodologies and methods for scholarly legal research, which until recently were not considered of much relevance to the study of law at the University of Malta. Also, it is written with the law student in mind. They may be students writing a dissertation for their LLB (Hons) qualification, or others reading for a Master’s Degree or a Doctorate.
There is a tendency to confuse legal research, used by practising lawyers, with scholarly legal research used in academic writing.
The book is distinct and focuses on the empirical. Besides research methodologies and methods, the book includes a discussion on the goals of legal scholarship, some thoughts on the practicalities of drawing up a research proposal, a suggested structure for a research study, the code of practice in research ethics, and guidelines in OSCOLA.
The book carries a Foreword by Professor Kevin Aquilina, Dean of the Faculty of Laws, and a back-cover blurb by Judge Professor David J Attard, Chancellor of the University of Malta.
The book launch will be held on 11 May at 17:30 at the University of Malta Valletta Campus.
